Distributed community in a virtual world—connected or disconnected?

A lot has changed in a short time this year with events, conferences, and meetups shifting from physical spaces to online “virtually” overnight.

One way that I’m trying to wrap my head around how to make sense of all of this is to talk about it. In this session, I’ll mainly draw on my experiences in organizing and participating in various conferences and meetups throughout the year, including 2 virtual Ansible Contributor Summits—including how we had to cancel all our plans in Sweden for the first European summit in a while.

I’ll share what fell short and what thrived in these circumstances, and take a look at how the numbers/metrics have shifted from offline to online and what that means for the community.

Carol is a Community Architect at Red Hat, supporting several upstream communities such as Ansible and ManageIQ. She has been actively involved in open source communities while working for Jolla and Nokia previously. In addition, she also has experiences in software development/integration in her 12 years in the mobile industry. Carol has spoken at events around the world, and mostly online this year. On a personal note, Carol plays the Timpani in an orchestra in Tampere, Finland, where she now calls home.
